A sphere from figured maple resting on a stand, made from ash and carved into an organic shaoe with fingerlike tips supporting the sphere, stained black and finished with liming wax to show the grain.
This was made for the same competition as Second Balance, but I decided that it was too oddball to show it. It does look like it's straight out of a fortune tellers' tent, and to make it even better, the stand is hollowed out and has a small LED torch inside to light the underside of the sphere

I had been fooling around with some egg shapes, and finally decided it was time to try my hand on turning a sphere. The first one wasn't actually very round (it looks alright, but wqhen you roll it across a surface, it rolls this way and that way), but the second one came out a lot better. When I looked at the patterns of the wood, I thought, mhhm, this looks like a planet with too many clouds in the sky. And after some more head scratching, I came up with the final idea. Plus, I already had a rough turned piece of ash in a dog bone shape, so here goes. I reckon the result is worth it.
