Here I've mounted my cold-cast pewter sculpted relief 'Hare & Moon' plaque, inside a deep 3D wooded box frame. The words associated with this age-old Pagan symbol; Growth...Abundance...New beginnings...Good fortune...Fertility and Rebirth are inscribed around the outside of the plaque....making it a lovely present for all sorts of occasions!
I cast the plaque in my coal shed, with a pewter finish (metal and resin), so hopefully it looks like moonlight! After casting, each plaque is polished and buffed until it gleams ( I have no finger nails left!). Black wax is then applied to provide a contrast in the recesses, and I add a little more sparkle with a couple of coloured acrylic rhinestones.
I then mount it in the 3D box frame, to which I give either a baby blue or lilac colour wash, or a pewter wax finish, and also apply strips of creamy-yellow, lilac and purple decoupage paper around the front. A small amount of pewter wax is run along the edges of the coloue wash, and the pewter plaque is mounted on a colour co-ordinated card inside. The front pane is glass, and the back is finished with blue velvet fablon and a brass saw tooth-hanger....ta dah!
The pewter plaque itself measures 9cm x 9cm (3.5" x 3.5") and the box frame is approximately 12.5cm x 12.5cm by about 2.5cm deep.
I always like to add detail onto the soles of the feet of any animal I sculpt, and the feet are my favourite part of this little Hare...my name is also on his bottom
I've always been fascinated by the moon, and also the associations and myths people attach to animals. Any animal is always a pleasure to sculpt, and to then add in my passion for colours and patterns and to produce something which is, hopefully, lovely to look at...well, I've really enjoyed myself!
