Description

“A Greyhound should be headed like a snake and necked like a drake, backed like a beam, sided like a bream, footed like a cat and tailed like a rat.”

This wonderful poetic description of a greyhound was written in 1486 by Juliana Berners, a nun from the Abbess of Sopewell, in “The Book of Saint Albans” about hawking, hunting and fishing.

At least 4000 years old, the Greyhound is arguably the oldest purebred canine. Combining speed, grace and exceptional hunting ability with loyal and devoted companionship, the greyhound has been used in the sport of coursing (the pursuit of prey by sight instead of scent) since ancient times. It can reach speeds of between 40 and 45mph.

There is plenty of amusing greyhound behaviour terminology to learn. These big-hearted hunters like to alternate between the “Zoomies” (galloping with abandon on winged feet) and the “Snoozies” (lounging and dozing in comfort and warmth).

The print combines my hand drawn lettering with illustration and each one is hand-printed on my press in a soft grey ink, then individually signed.

They will fit happily in a ready made frame, like the Ikea Ribba (52x52cm square frame with matt/mount included) or they can be bought in handmade wooden frames from my website at www.theenlightenedhound.com (UK shipping only for framed prints).

Inspiration

These prints combine hand drawn lettering with illustration. I was inspired to tell the story of different dog breeds using a dog tag design. I am fascinated by the history and unique characteristics that define particular breeds and I wanted to celebrate that uniqueness by creating dog breed specific prints.

The dog tag idea came from thoughts about the plight of dogs in rescue centres and shelters. I imagined that they might be wearing a dog tag that helped prospective owners find out more about the dog in the hope that they might be rescued and given a ‘forever home’. There’s a bit of the children’s character Paddington Bear in this project too - the lost bear with a luggage label attached - entreating its finder to 'look after this bear'.
