Item details

This little box is handbuilt from porcelain and finished with a transparent glaze.

The lid is set with a piece of hand embroidered linen. I used my collection of second world war letters and painstakingly copied whole pages of the letters using ink blue thread. I then cut them into lid-sized pieces and sewed them onto small pieces of wadding.

The inside of each box has a line from the same letter. I chose special, loving words for the inside and had them made into hi-fire decals so they are permanent.

Each little box is unique and comes in its own sturdy cardboard box.

I had a collection of second world war letters that I wanted to use but had never found the right project.

I realised that the letters were tiny snapshots of people’s lives, containing precious messages of love and hope bundled up with the mundane details of everyday domestic life. With that in mind I used those everyday messages on the lids but saved the private messages of love for the inside of the little boxes.
