I regularly visit Cornwall and love it! I take loads of photos and make lots of sketches which I then turn into Batik paintings when I return home to my studio in lovely rural Lincolnshire.
Batik is a very old technique of using wax as a resist against the dyes on fabrics.
I work 'backwards' if compared to regular painting. I start with white and work through the colours from light to dark, layering each colour with wax to anchor that area of colour to the fabric. I can have up to 40 layers of colour and wax before the picture is complete. The wax is completely removed from the work when finished.
