Item details

Felted merino and shetland with additional textile pieces for texture, working from an original photograph, this piece is best described as a textile painting. The fleece is layered in small 'teases' to create the multi tones and textures of the sky, landscape and sea. This is a scene that I look at on a daily basis while walking the dog, assimilating the changing relationship of light and dark, water and sky. The yellow is a band of reeds at the head of the lagoon turned golden by the evening sun. Silk scraps and threads have been used to provide additional texture.

As with all my work, nothing is pre sketched, everything develops organically as I work with the colours and textures of the fleece and the other fabrics.

The whole piece has been wet felted unto raw edged blue silk then mounted on padded board, pulling the piece taut. Sold in a whitewashed box frame.

In one of the photographs above I have included a copy of the original photograph and the materials used to make this piece. This is one of my favourite everyday views. It is constantly changing, with the seasons, the light and the tide. I take the dog passed here, often twice per day and photograph it constantly from differing angles and perspectives. For me this constantly changing relationship between sea and sky is an on going influence on my work playing out in the relationship between the colours of the fleece. I use pieces of fabric to add additional depth and texture
