Herdwick sheep - handmade needle felted ewe

Description

'Thou's gitten a Herdie yow' is Cumbrian dialect meaning you've got a Herdwick ewe. My sheep are handmade from wool locally sourced in the Lake District and which has been needle felted. The size of my yow is about 17 cm nose to tail x 10 cm high. This sheep is made from the grey wool of a mature Herdwick - either from Blencathra, St John's in the Vale, or Eskdale - and the white wool of a Swaledale sheep from the Lickle Valley. The sheep come with a label explaining what they are and a little information about smit marks and the breed of sheep.

The sheep are not suitable for very small children. As they are individually handmade the sheep supplied will be slightly different from the one shown in the photograph. Beware of putting them in bright sunlight as the coloured fleece can fade, as happens naturally with live sheep.

Inspiration

Animals and the Lake District, including the dialect, have always been my great passion. For many years I spent all my spare time working on a small hill farm in the Lickle Valley. The farm is home to suckler cows and various sheep breeds. I got to know all the little characteristics of the sheep. The Herdwicks - typically known as Herdies - are lovely and quiet to work with, though they can 'ratch' a bit (meaning they basically go wherever they choose and can scale drystone walls with ease if the cam stones don't project out to prevent it). The flock were hefted to the Dunnerdale with Seathwaite fells (hefting means they live on their own heaf - the area of the fell where they were raised and where they stay without being fenced in). I also enjoyed working among the Swaledales and Mashams (Swaledale crossed with a Teeswater tup).
