The Thornborough Henges are three impressive circular enclosures lying close to the River Ure near the village of West Tanfield in North Yorkshire. These henges, formed by massive ditches and banks with opposing entrances were built in the Neolithic period. The middle henge was built over an older monument - a cursus - a long avenue or enclosure of uncertain purpose. These sites became the foci for other monuments including burial mounds in the Bronze Age. The design in the top-right corner of the print evokes the incised decoration on Neolithic pottery found nearby at Nosterfield.
