This dainty necklace depicts the haws and leaves of the Hawthorn. It is an original design hand embroidered on silk using fine continuous filament floss silk thread.
It is mounted in a wooden frame and hung on a 16" silverplate chain. The pendant measures 25mm.
The Hawthorn is a common site in Britain, often used as hedging but if left can grow to be a tree of around 10 metres and can live to a great age. It has many alternative names including:
Quickthorn - as it grows so quickly
May - because it flowers in May
Bread and cheese tree - as the young leaves are edible and were often eaten in times of hardship.
In spring you will find the Hawthorn covered in white and sometimes pick flowers and in late summer with haws (berries).
The Hawthorn was thought to be the ancestor of the maypole and was the source of May Day garlands.
