This pendant depicts a Heartsease flower and stem. It is an original design hand embroidered on silk, mounted in a silver plated frame measuring 24.7mm x 46.2mm. The pendant is hung on a 16" silver plated chain.
Heartsease has many different names including: Wild Pansy, Field Pansy, Johnny Jump-up and Love in Idleness. It is famous as the flower Oberon sends Puck to find in A Midsummer Night's Dream. The flowers are usually yellow and purple with distinctive black markings and it is often found on hilly pastures, cultivated fields and waste places, although it can be formally grown in your garden.
Heartsease has long been used in medicine and is a renowned heart tonic, used to treat high blood pressure, indigestion and colds. It cleanses blood and induces perspiration. It is also used to treat skin disorders such as eczema. The flowers contain antioxidants and are edible.
Folklore believed that it should not be picked on a fine day or while it still had dew on it or this could result in the death of a loved one - or rain. It was also believed that carrying Heartsease could make a lover think of you.
