Traditionally these crosses were made from rushes, willow or straw on the night before her feast day on February 1st. Crosses placed over doors and windows are said to bring protection against fire, lightning, illness and evil. Although I can't offer any guarantees on those, these crosses mark a celebration of a mighty woman. Said to have founded a school of art which included metal work and illumination (the creation of books). \n\nSt Brigid is the patron saint of healers, poets, blacksmiths, livestock and dairy workers. \nThe pre Christian gaelic tradition of Imbolc is also celebrated on the 1 st February when the return of Spring as the light returns. \n\nThe willow is farmed and harvested in Somerset.
