Often the blades are beyond saving and go into the recycling but the handles are a thing of beauty, with their beautifully crafted sculptural shapes. Originally I chose to leave the handles as found, all different colours, scuffed and often paint-splattered, but they just looked too messy, and detracted from the shape of the wood. So I stripped and sanded and stained to create something slightly less authentic but prettier (in my eyes).
