My novel hooks are designed for the bedroom or bathroom door of the more adventurous. Each appendage is individually hand-carved from reclaimed mahogany, sanded, stained, polished and waxed, and firmly screwed and glued to a mahogany backplate. The backplates are all different sizes as I have had to cut around the many nail holes in the original timber, so please do check dimensions carefully. The entire range of Choads, Packets, Stiffies and Shrooms is hand-carved from Brazilian mahogany - now a rare and protected timber - but reclaimed from a farm near Clitheroe, built in the 1950s. This timber served its purpose as the rafters of a barn, but is now living again as a limited run of cheeky household sculptures. As can be seen from the reverse pics, the timber is a light reddish brown but I wanted to create a darker and more distressed patina: I wanted these pieces to look like they had been recovered from an abandoned Victorian molly house. None is perfect: all have some flaw or other, and I have tried to highlight those in the photos. After all, if they were all identical how could you have a favourite?
