The folklore and history surrounding Corn Dollies are diverse, yet at their core lies a simple belief: that the Spirit of the Corn, whether oats, wheat, rye, or barley, dwelled within the final sheaf harvested at the end of the season. Special ceremonies marked its cutting, and from this sheaf, figures or traditional designs were crafted. These creations were kept in homes until the following year, believed to ensure the successful germination of seed corn in the coming Spring. According to some folklore traditions, both men and women crafted small Corn Dollies, often presenting them as tokens of affection to their sweethearts. These tokens, known as Favours or Harvest Knots, were worn as buttonholes. It was customary for a Favour gifted by a man or boy to a woman to retain its ears of corn, symbolising fertility and the promise of a fruitful harvest.
