Liz Samways Profile
I have been making jewellery for nearly 20 years, and printmaking for around 10. I work in a studio in Leeds, Yorkshire where I can watch the antics of the local magpies.
The patterns of the landscape fascinate me – fields, houses, fences and boundaries – seen from the train window, on maps new and old, and in aerial views.
Influenced by many and various things - my work as a printmaker and garden designer, the English landscape and gorgeous 1950s textiles. I also love the work of English artists such as Samuel Palmer, Robert Taverner, Ben Nicholson and Eric Ravilious.
I get very enthusiastic about the endless possibilities and sometimes unpredictable nature of the materials and techniques I have come across and am always keen to try new things, especially when it comes to mixing jewellery and printmaking ideas and methods.
After finishing a degree in Art History in the early nineties, I started to explore the more practical side of things, with evening classes and weekend workshops, help and encouragement from other artists, and a lot of trial and error!
Later I gave up my career in sales & marketing to look after the kids and retrained in Horticulture and then Garden Design. Meanwhile I developed my jewellery and print-making.
I now sell online and through craft and makers' fairs throughout Yorkshire. I'm always keen to discuss commissions so please contact me if you have any ideas you think I could help you with.
