Alice Boden Profile

It's all about strandlines. Like many women, I have had several strands to my life, bringing up 3 children and earning various livings, but making and selling Tweedmatters collages and cards is my first venture into the world of self-employment.

My inspiration is the stunningly beautiful north west Highlands of Scotland: the harbour and hills I see from my window, the seastrand, the big skies, changeable weather, the light, the rocks and plants...

Then there's the Harris Tweed, made only on hand looms on the Hebridean islands of Harris and Lewis, a short ferry trip from us. Anyone who thinks that Harris Tweed is still just fabric to make deerstalkers and sensible skirts from hasn't looked at it recently! As well as the fine traditional patterns and shades, it's now made in every hue. In these tweeds I can see the colours of peaty burns, heather moors, lichens and strandweed. My work draws attention to the mixes of coloured fibres in each woolly strand of these textiles... Love the stuff!
