Paul Bailey Profile

A thirty-something artist from the Dengie Peninsular in Essex.

My thoughts…

There is no doubt we are very privileged to live in a country so blessed with such a widely varied landscape. Man’s history is etched in every square foot of this land: ancient track ways cross the moors; ruined cottages shelter sheep on the mountain-side; medieval fishing weirs decay slowly in the costal mud. These human imprints have become fused with the natural landscape and form the focal point of my work. Although many of my paintings depict real scenes, I have no issue altering the elements, textures and tone in an attempt to capture the real essence of these places. I want the viewer to feel, for instance, that the stone bothy ahead is the only available refuge from the gathering storm. For me, drama is paramount.

I have been painting in my spare time for a couple of years. I feel the spontaneous nature of watercolour, over any other medium I have experimented with, helps me best capture the emotion and drama of my chosen subjects. I hope you enjoy my paintings.
