The inspiration behind this print was the lovely colour combination between red and blue which reminded me of Air Mail packaging, with the angled stripes of red and blue. Then the song words "I sent a letter to my love" came into my head. I then combined these with an old Victorian post box we have in Buxton, called a Penfold, it is so decorative with the leaf motifs on the roof of the box. An original five colour hand pressed linocut print. Last summer we stopped off in Troyes on our two week road trip around European towns. It is the ancient capitol of the Champagne region in France. The medieval old town is full of these rickety, slanted half timbered houses. Each house front is beautifully painted in different subdued colours to its neighbour, with contrasting timber. These particular grand houses had been converted into shops on the ground floor. Inspite of their commercial use they still managed to retain the original charm. These buildings are Victorian Almshouses built in 1904 by Milnthorp. They form a crescent shape of three blocks of four single storey homes set in a gorgeous communal garden. Some have triangular facades and others have a rounded arch, it is all very symetrical, only the trees and shrubs throw randomness into the foreground.
