Folksy : Northfield Primitives

Inspired by vintage and antique toys, I design and make animals and dolls which I stitch on a beautiful 1920's Singer treadle sewing machine. I love to use old Meccano wheels, vintage ribbons and buttons, traditional German glass eyes and rusty bells in my work, which adds to the vintage charm of each animal.

little lakeland terrier on wheels

MADE TO ORDER please allow up to 7 days for me to make a little Lakeland Terrier especially for you.

This little Lakeland Terrier has been hand coloured and stands very proudly on his vintage red Meccano wheels - 16cm tall. He wears a tiny rusty bell around his neck, fastened onto a piece of dyed twine, and has another big old rusty bell attached to his 'pull-along' rope. I just adore his little flop-over ears. He has a wonderfully vintage look and really is a cutie!

He was stitched on my old Singer treadle sewing machine and is one of my own designs. As with all my creations, this little dog is intended as collectors item and is not intended as a toy for children.

old brown rabbit

MADE TO ORDER - please allow up to 7 days for me to make a little rabbit especially for you.

This little rabbit dreams of becoming a REAL rabbit - she heard the story of The Velveteen Rabbit when she was just a wee kitten (she informs me that that is the correct name for a baby rabbit and not a bunny as I once mistakenly called her). So she hops from one window sill to the other, dreaming of leaping through fields of fresh grass, and long lazy days in the warm sun....

This little rabbit is made from Osnaburg. She has been dyed with strong coffee, baked in the oven, then gently sanded to give her a wonderfully vintage appearance. She stands about 20cm tall, and has a little wensleydale fleece needle-felted bob-tail which helps her to stand quite happily unsupported. She has embroidered eyes and little nose, and would look lovely on an old bookcase or amongst a collection of old toys.

Little rabbit was stitched on an old singer treadle sewing machine using one of my own patterns. She is intended as a decorative item and is not intended for children.

little brown dog on wheels

This little brown dog has places to go on his vintage Meccano wheels...

A little dog, made from Osnaburg then dyed with strong coffee, baked in the oven (he didn't like that I can tell you!) then gently sanded (which he quite enjoyed) to give him his lovely vintage look.

Little dog stands about 12cm tall on his old Meccano wheels. He wears a little rusty bell and always a little smile!

Stitched on an old Singer treadle sewing machine, little dog is one of my own designs and my absolute favourite (but don't tell the others).

MADE TO ORDER please allow up to 7 days for me to make a little brown dog on wheels especially for you (but if you need something in a bit of a hurry, please let me know and I will always do my best!).

old velvet rabbit doorstop

This little rabbit dreams of becoming a REAL rabbit - she heard the story of The Velveteen Rabbit when she was just a wee kitten (she informs me that that is the correct name for a baby rabbit and not a bunny as I once mistakenly called her). So she hops from one window sill to the other, dreaming of leaping through field of fresh grass, and wonders whether she will keep her vintage rose colour (which she is rather proud of) when her wishes finally come true...

This old velvety rabbit is a doorstop, suitable for INTERNAL DOORS.

She made from a soft rose velvet and a pretty floral linen fabric, and stuffed with toy stuffing and lots of rice to give her weight. Old velvet rabbit stands about 28cm tall from nose to tail (35cm including her ears). She has vintage glass German eyes, a little nose stitched with linen thread, and a little needle-felted bob tail made from Wensleydale fleece. She has wonderfully expressive ears. I have finished her simply, with a tiny ribbon and rusty bell.

mouse house

A little mouse has made a house in an old stocking made from red cotton ticking. Mouse is small at approx. 7cm tall (he was very wriggly and hence difficult to measure!). His stocking home is about 19cm long from heel to the top. There is a little hanging tag made from matching red ticking so that the stocking can be hung from a hook.

I have tried to make mouse comfy by filling the stocking with rags then dried moss, and flowers and some red berry pips for added colour. I've added a little rusty bell to the toe, just in case a cat comes too close to mouse's house!

Mouse and his house are my own creation and were made on my old Singer treadle machine.

little giraffe on vintage Meccano wheels

MADE TO ORDER - Please allow up to 7 days for me to make a little giraffe especially for you.

Little giraffe is so quiet you wouldn't know she was there. She tells me that she feels rather awkward most of the time, which is unfortunate as she is by far the tallest animal in the Nursery (25cm on her little red wheels) and is difficult not to notice....

Little giraffe is one of my new designs. She is made from Osnaburg which has been hand-coloured and dyed to give her a wonderful vintage look. She stands 25cm tall on her vintage red Meccano wheels. Little giraffe wears a tiny rusty bell on some twine around her neck, and has a larger rusty bell on the handle of her pull-along cord.

She was stitched on my old singer treadle sewing machine using one of my own patterns.

Please note that she is intended for decoration only and not intended for children.

Elf - medium

Ready to post! A vintage style Elf - handcrafted by me on my old treadle machine, using my own pattern.

He is made from velvet and cotton fabrics and has button-jointed arms. He is my medium sized elf, measuring 63cm from the tip of his hat to the heels of his boots! I love the look of him sitting in an old chair, but if you would like me to attach a small loop of thin twine to the back of his neck so he can be hung on a hook, just let me know!

I've used vintage mother of pearl buttons to finish him and added a little neck-tie with a rusty bell attached.

I have made these Elves in 3 sizes in the past. This listing is for the medium sized elf pictured in photos 2 and 3. The large elf sat next to him is listed separately.

Elf is intended for decoration and is not intended for children. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Little elephant is made from Osnaburg which has been dyed with strong coffee, baked in the oven, then gently sanded to create her distinctive vintage, careworn look. She has delicately coloured cheeks, and tiny embroidered eyes.

Little elephant stands quite happily on vintage Meccano wheels at about 12.5cm tall, and measures about 15cm from her nose to her little tail.

She is one of my own designs, and was stitched entirely on an old 1920's singer treadle sewing machine. She is intended as a decorative item and is not intended for children.

little mohair Scottie dog

Meet my latest creation...a little Scottie dog.

He is made from mohair and is a very proud little dog. He stands 7" / 17cm tall and measures 21cm / 8" from his nose to his tail. He has traditional German glass eyes and a little nose and mouth stitched in black linen thread. He was rather indecisive about which tartan collar to wear for his grand debut, so insisted that I photograph him wearing them both so that you can decide which looks smartest!

If you decide that little Scottie dog is the one for you, please message me and confirm which collar you would like RED tartan or GREEN tartan.

Little Scottie dog is one of my own designs and was stitched on an old Singer treadle sewing machine. Please not: His is not intended for children due to his traditional glass eyes.

little scruffy dog

'What a scruffy dog you are, I gently scold him as he finishes racing around the room and drops his little ball at my feet. He gives me a look like butter wouldn't melt, before attacking my slippers. He loves everything in his little world, but despises baths. Oh we have tried...but such whining and barking and I won't even mention the long faces - so a scruffy dog he will remain, but oh so loveable too.

Scruffy dog is made from mohair fabric and stands about 11cm tall. He has been hand-coloured and gently dyed, to give him a lovely vintage look. He wears a tiny rusty bell around his neck, fastened onto a piece of dyed twine. He really is a cutie!

He was stitched on my old Singer treadle sewing machine and is one of my own designs. As with all my creations, this little dog is intended as collectors item and is not intended for children.

MADE TO ORDER - please allow up to 7 days for me to make a little Scruffy dog especially for you, Sarah x

little bear on wheels

A little bear...with added va va voom!

Little bear is made from Osnaburg which has been dyed with strong coffee, baked in the oven, then gently sanded to create his distinctive vintage, careworn look.
He has delicately coloured cheeks, and the cutest little embroidered face.

He stands quite happily on vintage Meccano wheels at about 12cm tall, and measures about 15cm from his nose to his bottom!

He is one of my own designs, and was stitched entirely on an old 1920's singer treadle sewing machine.

Spaniel on vintage Meccano wheels

A little Spaniel made from the most wonderful thick, vintage, golden velvet. He stands very proudly on his black spoked, vintage Meccano wheels.

This little dog has vintage boot buttons for eyes, and wears a smart brown velvet collar. He has a little pull-along string with a large rusty bell attached, and stands about 28cm tall / 34cm from his nose to his tail.

I have probably enough fabric to make eight of these little pups, so they will be a very limited edition. He was made using my own pattern and stitched on my old Singer treadle sewing machine. He will arrive with his own little certificate, numbered, signed and dated by me. He is 1/8 and also has a small number 1 embroidered on his back left paw.

Please note he is intended as a decorative collectors item and is not suitable for children.

Scruffy dog

Sruffy dog loves warm sunny days, running in the garden and sniffing for bones. He should be called waggy dog, for his little tail is always swishing back and forth - he is such a happy little soul...although Scruffy suits him best. He will never win Best in Show, but he is always eager for adventures and a truly dependable companion...

Scruffy dog is made from Mohair which I have dyed to give him his vintage, careworn look. I've used cotton fabrics, which I have hand-dyed, for his foot pads and underside of his ears. He wears a little fabric collar with tiny bells on, which jingle when you move him, as well as a lovely brassy chain as his old dog lead. He really is a cutie!

Little dog is five way jointed so he can be posed, although he can not stand unaided. He is 23cm/9" tall when he is standing, and sits about 17cm/7" tall when sitting. He is stuffed in a traditional way using woodwool, sand and steel shot in his belly for texture and weight, and a little soft toy stuffing. He has traditional german glass eyes, and is not intended for children.

He was made using one of my own patterns, and was stitched on an old Singer treadle sewing machine with lots of love.
