Folksy : Julia Smith Ceramics

I am a potter and work from my home in the Highlands of Scotland. Most of my work is thrown using red earthenware clay, decorated with subtle glazes and fired high to make it very strong. I like to draw either directly in to the clay surface or transfer drawings on to the glaze and fire them in.

Cloud and Bird Mug

The body of the mug measures arroximately 92mm across and the height to the top of the handle is around 110mm.

To make it I started off with a ball of red earthenware clay which I threw on a potters wheel and then I added on a decorative handle and the hand modelled bird. The handle was made by rolling a coil of clay in a mold taken from a vintage cut glass dish. Liquid white clay, called slip, was poured inside to give it bright fresh interior and then it was fired. It was decorated with leadfree, foodsafe glaze and then the hand drawn decal was fired into the smooth glazed surface.
This mug would make a very cute small vase too.

You can see the process from start to finish in this two minute film at http://vimeo.com/27113222

Sgraffito Bike Mug

The body of the mug measures approximately 90mm across and the height to the top of the handle is around 90mm. Each one is handmade therefore no two mugs are identical. The shape, size and glaze application will vary slightly between each item.
To make it I started off with a ball of red earthenware clay which I threw on a potter’s wheel and then I dipped the body in slip before adding on a decorative handle. The handle was made by rolling a coil of clay in a mold taken from a vintage cut glass dish. Slip was poured inside to give it a bright fresh interior and the sgraffito drawings were carved through the slip on the outside before firing. It was decorated with lead-free, food safe glaze and then a decal was fired into the smooth glazed surface.
You can see the mug making process (not including the sgraffito part) from start to finish in this two minute film at http://vimeo.com/27113222

Blue Bunny Sugar Pot

This pot measures approximately 95mm diameter and 100mm high. I throw the sugar pots on a wheel using red earthenware clay and then dip them in white liquid clay (slip). The heart shaped handle was hand modelled and fits nicely in your fingers and a hole is drilled in the lid to fit a spoon. Once the slip has dried I carve the drawing through the layer of clay and then fire the pot. A food safe lead-free glaze is applied and the decal is fired into the glazed surface. You can wash this pot in a dishwasher and it could be used for sugar, salt, jam, chutney or honey.

Gold and Bird Ceramic Soap Dish

This soap dish measures 95mm x 95mm x 40mm. It was hand modelled then decorated with a smooth glaze and gold lustre. It stands on four feet and has a hole in the centre to drain away water and the soap sits on raised lines to prevent sogginess.

Song Thrush Mug

The body of the mug measures arroximately 90mm across and the height to the top of the handle is around 90mm. Each one is handmade therefore no two mugs are identical. The shape, size and glaze application will vary slightly between each item.

To make it I started off with a ball of red earthenware clay which I threw on a potters wheel and then I added on a decorative handle.
