AUTUMN LEAF & FLOWER BROOCH

Artificial floral pieces, originally made for use in the theatre by David Bloor, last of the flower makers, using Victorian tools and methods. Years later, they were reassembled as a brooch by his grand-daughter, Louise Bloor, for the family emporium. Made from hand-dyed lawn cotton and wire, glued to a silver-coloured brooch pin. Size 80mm x 60mm.

A soft, seasonal brooch in glowing autumn colours, assembled from cotton leaf and flower pieces. A perfect combination of the vintage and the hand-made.

VELVET VIOLET NECKLACE

Velvet hand-made flower (4 cm diameter) backed with lawn and crepe paper on a short (38cm) gold-plate chain and findings.

A violet in rich purple velvet on a short wire stem, hand-made using original Victorian flower maker’s tools by David Bloor, around the 1980s, possibly as pieces for a dress-maker or milliner, One of these forgotten flowers has now been rethought and re-crafted as the centrepiece for a necklace, by David's granddaughter Louise Bloor. Craft across the generations.

BUNCH O' FLOWERS BROOCH

Tiny artificial flower spray with fabric petals and dipped plaster seeds on nylon stems, wrapped in stiffened crinkly paper and mounted on a gold-coloured metal brooch pin. Size, 7.5 cm long, and about 2 cm wide.

The little cream flowers were originally intended for use as part of a cake decoration. They were found among stock which had been left over when David Bloor finally closed his flower-making business, W.F.Johnsons, at the end of the last century. The firm had been passed down to him by his Great Uncle, and still used the same Victorian tools and methods to make artificial flowers by hand. David passed away in 2005, but some years later, a new generation of Bloors, Tom Bloor and his daughters, Joanna and Louise, re-imagined these floral pieces, and reworked them by hand as a bunch of miniature flowers. Wrapped in coloured paper, as if bought from a tiny florist's shop, the flowers have been mounted as a brooch on a conventional metal brooch pin. Add a dash of colour and originality to your lapel with the bunch o' flowers brooch!

PALE PURPLE POSY AND GREEN LEAF HAIR BAND

Tiny artificial flowers, cut fabric with plaster-dipped seeds on cotton-covered wire, mounted on a silver-coloured elastic hair band (32cm un-stretched) Leaves are around 4cm from stem to tip.

A spray of floral pieces made from lawn cotton, rayon, wire and crepe paper, on a stretchy nylon hair band. The purple and green of this spray suggest an all-year celebration of International Women’s Day (8th March). The leaves and the spray were originally put together by hand using Victorian flower maker's tools and methods by David Bloor. His son Tom and granddaughters Joanna and Louise have reworked these pieces by hand, in this case, as a charming hair ornament on a conventional stretchy hair band.

RED AND YELLOW HEAD

Taking a shop-damaged polystyrene display head, acquired from a wig shop in Walthamstow, Tom Bloor reshaped the face by hand, re-crafting this manufactured piece into something unique. Some thin board was fitted to the base, to add greater stability and balance. Tom's daughter Joanna then took up the work, designing and hand-painting the elaborate facial decoration. The paint used is acrylic, while a final coat of water-based varnish gives the piece a subtle sheen. Light-weight and yet striking, this elegant and exotic-looking head is perfect for displaying hats and head bands on a craft stall, for instance, or in a shop. Alternatively, this decorative bust with its enigmatic expression and androgynous looks would make a fine conversation piece adorning any shelf or bookcase.

Dimensions - Height 28 cm, width 15 cm, depth 20 cm, base 16 cm x 16 cm

Please note - Due to the materials used, this item is not suitable for the outdoors.

WILDFLOWER HAIRCLIP

Hand-made artificial flowers mounted on a 100mm silver-coloured metal hinged hairclip.

A springtime treat in yellow, white, green and blue, these floral pieces were cut from lawn cotton and rayon using original Victorian flower makers tools, then made up into sprays with plasterwork centres by David Bloor, sometime between the 1970s and the end of the last century. Rescued from a cardboard box in a drafty attic, they were later reworked and refashioned into a wildflower posy fixed to a hairclip with green felt and flower-makers' wire by Tom Bloor, son of David, and his daughters, Louise and Joanna. This piece thus spans the eras, subtly linking the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
