Folksy : Be Knot Afrayed!

Welcome to Be Knot Afrayed - purveyor of practical and pretty knotted things!

I've always enjoyed knotting - ever since I was a Girl Guide! It has taken me several decades to find some practical application to this craft!

Be Knot Afrayed! offers a variety of practical paracord (parachute cord) and pretty Chinese Knot Cord presents which are all hand-knotted by myself. There are lots of colours to choose from and I can make items individually to size.

If there are not enough items in my shop that you were wanting please contact me and I will "restock".

If you have seen me at Craft Fayres or Festivals and the things you've seen are not listed please contact me!

Happy knotting!

Survival Bracelets made with British military paracord!

The paracord (parachute cord) I use for my practical gifts is imported from the US. I've managed to track down the UK military issue which is a little different but still is a strong with a breakage strength of 550lbs (approx 250 kg). The only problem is that so far I've only found it in one colour - dark green!

As with the other survival bracelets that I make, these are made with a continuous strand of paracord of approx. 20ft/6m in length and are designed to be unpicked in case of an emergency. Very useful if your bootlace breaks or your dog lead snaps or for any other situation where a good length of cord will help! In the buckle is a whistle, which although is fairly small, has a very shrill sound which covers a good distance. Is great for calling your dog (and lost husbands on Dartmoor)!

If you like my survival bracelets but prefer to Buy British - this is for you!

Survival Bracelets

The Bracelets have approximately 3m/10ft of each colour (or 6m/20ft of the same colour if desired). The buckle has a whistle in it which is quite shrill and covers quite a distance for a tiny thing! I have also been informed by friends that they are very good at getting their dog's attention! In essence, unless you have a very big wrist(!) they are used as a decorative and compact way of carrying a substantial amount of paracord with you. I usually clip mine to my rucksack.

They are designed to be unpicked in case of an emergency. For example: to replace a broken bootlace, emergency dog lead, tent guy rope, binding broken things, boating, kite sailing... So not only do they look good but they are practical as well!

Fantastic idea for when your guy rope breaks when you're away at this year's festivals!

The paracord (parachute cord) I use comes in a variety of colours, just let me know which two colours you would like or I can make them one solid colour if you prefer.

Paracord Dog Collars

I have been asked by several people if I could make them collars for their dogs, which I happily agreed to! Please let me know if you would like a D ring to the collar so you can attach dog tags, leads etc.

These are individually hand-knotted to your order so please let me know what colour(s) you would like and the size when you place your order. I can either superglue the ends in place or allow them to be unpicked in case of an emergency - just let me know.

I also think these collars must be pretty comfortable for the dogs to wear as they are pliable when made (see photo) and not as stiff and ridged like some of the ones you see in the pet shops.

Thanks Jess for the photos of Flicker and to Sophie for photos of Donnie in their hand-knotted collars - what handsome hounds!

If anyone else has suggestions on what I can make with the paracord - please let me know!

If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to ask!

Kindest regards

Julie

Paracord Dog LeadLeash

I make dog leads individually to order and they take about 3.5 to 4 hours each to knot!!

There is around 12m/40ft of paracord (parachute cord) and are made in cobra stitch (to match the dog collars I also make) and decorated with turk's heads. That's a lot of knots!!

The paracord is strong, durable, flexible and washable (just pop it into the machine on a low temp wash with your other non delicate coloureds).

When ordering please let me know which colour(s) you would like and the length including the handle. ( I may have to order the paracord in as I do not keep large stocks)!

Thank you Donnie for modelling the lead for me and for trying out my prototype!

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Kind regards!

Dog collar and lead leash

As you can see I have in my Be Knot Afrayed! shop both dog collars and leads/leashes listed separately. If you would like to have a combined set I will happy to knot you up one for a slightly reduced price. You choose the colour(s) and the sizes! Please bear in mind that there are a lot of knots to do to create your item - the lead alone will take me around 3.5 - 4 hours! I may also need to order the paracord (parachute cord) in so if you have a special day you want the collar and lead for - just give me as much time as possible.

The paracord is durable, flexible and washable - just put it in your (non delicate) colour wash on a low temperature.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Paracord Survival Bracelets with LED torch

Not only is the survival bracelet good to look at but it's practical too!

Approx. 3m/10ft of each colour (or 6m/20ft if it is a single colour) goes into each bracelet and the reason it is known as a survival bracelet is that it is designed to be able to be unpicked thus giving you 6m/20ft of paracord (parachute cord). More than enough to replace broken boot laces, temporary dog lead etc. Unless you have a particularly large wrist they may be a little bit big to wear. I usually clip mine onto my rucksack when I'm out walking or out and about. A great idea for Ten Tors or Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The orange buckle has a small, but shrill whistle in it which is great for calling dogs (and lost husbands on Dartmoor)!

A great practical gift for anyone going to festivals this year... The light will guide them back to the right tent and should a guy rope break the bracelet can be unpicked and used as a temporary one. I guess you could even blow the whistle during the performances!

Please let me know when you order what colours you would like me to make these for you. I can also make them in British Military paracord.

I have both white beam (currently in light green housing and black housing) and coloured beam LED torches in stock . (The white beam torches I have with the black housing are not quite as bright as the light green housing ones but are certainly fit for the purpose). I think the coloured beams are quite cool and definitely different! The

They are made with a loop to put through a belt at one end along with a keyring and at the other end is a lobster claw. They are approximately 15cm/6 inches long.

Torches on Glow in the Dark cord bracelet

This is a very simple idea and great for the dark evenings!

Do you ever run out of hands when you have to use a torch? I've put these small, but very bright, torches on an adjustable bracelet with a cobra knot . They will fit most sizes of wrist, just slip over your hand and tighten. If you have a particularly small or large wrist I will happily make them to order for you. They can also be hung around bags put around belt loops etc.

The torch can be squeezed to give a short burst of light or for a sustained light flick the small switch.

The Glow in the Dark cord will last for up to 5 hours if it has a good charge of daylight.

I do import the torches so cannot guarantee how old the battery is when I get them so as a mark of goodwill I am happy to replace the torch within 7 days of purchase if you are not entirely satisfied.

Please contact me if you have any questions. Thank you.

Alice HeadHairband

I love experimenting with different sorts of cord. I've recently been working with Chinese Knot Cord and came up with this idea!
It's a pretty knotted Alice band. The base is made of alloy (lead and nickel free) and 5mm thick. It's flexible so is comfortable for both children and adults.
The photos will just give you a sample of the colours that I have available. I've just received an order with 30 beautiful colours so if you let me what colour you would like - I am sure I can find something that will match that favourite outfit or maybe an accessory to a school uniform or colours to show your support for your favourite team?
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
