Here is an old school satchel that I have rescued and lovingly restored.
When I found this in a charity shop it was in a dreadful state: the seams were torn, as was some of the leather on the gussets, it had been badly repaired with some very light thread and awful stitching!!
So what have I done?
Firstly I took the bag completely apart with the exception of the buckles on the front pocket. These seemed to be in good shape.
The gussets for the pocket and body were of no use & the buckle tabs were broken so I removed and discarded them.
From the body gusset I managed to obtain 2 new buckle tabs.
I decided that the bag would be of more use with a wider main compartment but the limiting factor was the size of the flap. What I did was stitch the front pocket flat to the front body so it could be used as a tablet or phone pocket and give that extra width to the main compartment.
I made a new gusset for this from veg tan leather which I dyed to a near match and it suits and complements the main, original colour.
The original strap was broken, I have found 2 straps which are perfectly sound (see photo) I can attach these to the length the buyer requires OR I can fit a webbing strap.
You get the best of both worlds the true vintage distressed look, but without the falling to bits, seams coming undo etc that often comes with buying a vintage bag.
The external measurements are 3.5" by 9.25" by 13" for the main bag
The pocket is flat and measures 5.5" by 9.75".

I just love the way leather develops character with time and use. It is something that cannot really be captured or replicated. People try and there are good examples but I suppose its like trying to capture a sunset or buy pre faded jeans there is always something about them that looks false. That is why I have brought this bag back to life, it has history and has "lived" and had bumps and scrapes and bruises.
