The Story of the Quilts:
Once upon a time there was a knicker-maker and she lived in York and she used the finest silks to create underwear for brides.
She felt it was a shame to throw away the off-cuts of silk, so she kept them in a tin trunk. But after a few years the trunk was full.
The knicker-maker still did not want to throw the silk pieces away so she thought and thought and eventually she remembered her mother’s sewing tin, and the little metal hexagons that were used for making quilts.
And so this is what the knicker-maker did, she begun to turn the leftover silk into quilts. Hand-stitching together each hexagon until it formed a quilt for a baby’s cot or to keep cold toes warm in a double bed.
