A really stunning cushion made with vintage kimono silk fabric, hand-printed with a colourful phoenix design. Some of the details have been picked out in metallic paint. There is a mark at the top of the cushion which I believe to be ink from when it was originally painted - see last image for details.
The reverse of the cushion is in an unusual vintage cream double-gauze kimono silk.
I have another cushion from the same kimono which would make up a spectacular pair of cushions! Contact me for details.
The cloth has been taken from genuine japanese kimono dating from the 1960's. The fabric originates from the Niigata region in Japan which has been a main producer of kimono silk for over one hundred years.
I hope you can display and enjoy this cushion as if a beautiful work of art or sculpture. Much of the cloth I use is hand embroidered or hand-dyed and I think this is a wonderful way of preserving such an ancient and revered craft.
100% silk cover
Measures 30cm x 30cm.
Has a duck feather filler and non-removebale cover.
Spot clean only / professional dry clean.
Due the age of the cloth there may be some permanent marks and creases, but I think this all adds to the beauty and history of the cloth.
I love kimonos and am fascinated by the fact that a whole kimono is constructed from just one roll of fabric called a silk bolt or 'tanmono'. It is an exact length and width and nothing gets wasted. This in turn denotes the finished size of my cushions! (No kimonos were injured during the making of this cushion - all fabric is taken from damaged and un-weareable kimono!
