Inspiration
I’ve long been a fan of the work of early 20th Century horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. Like many of his fans I’ve felt compelled to create my own version of his most famous character, Cthulhu.
Lovecraft’s descriptions are clear enough for Cthulhu to be instantly recognisable, but give so much room for artists to engage their own imaginations. This Cthulhu is the first of many.
I love the idea of seeing how he would have been interpreted by different ancient cultures. Not only is it a way for me to experiment with different sculptural styles, but it blurs the line between fact and fiction in a way I particularly enjoy.
I started with an Egyptian Cthulhu, which I’ve based loosely on representations of the Goddess Tawaret. Her appearance as part hippo, part lion, and part crocodile seemed to echo the combination of different forms that Lovecraft used to make up Cthulhu. I also liked the idea of a more feminine Cthulhu.
