Inspiration
There were three main characters who came to me while writing this story, Sophie who writes to the Queen, the Queen herself and the Queen's Secretary, Mr Horatio Flowers-Simkinson who refuses to believe that the Corgis could possibly get fleas. After all, he says, 'It is against the law'. Sophie continues to send the Queen letters, offering her advice but is persistently rebuffed by the nasty Mr Vile Stingingnettle (as she calls him). Eventually, Sophie thinks up a plan to assist and the Queen is so pleased with the results, she gives the little girl the Nobel Fleas Prize.
I used pen and wash to create individual illustrations for each tiny element of this book, scanned the images into my computer and brought the whole spread together ready to be sent digitally to the publisher. Nearly every element of the picture is drawn, painted and cut out as separate pieces, thus giving the picture a 3D feel. It's time consuming, but I love the finished result.
