Fused glass maple leaf dish
Description
This pretty little dish can be purely ornamental or be used as a shallow server, sweet dish etc. It is made in opaque decorative glass with swirls of colour. This makes a lovely organic feel to the piece. It measures about 18 cm across the widest part and various depths up to about 3 cm.
The glass is cut in the shape of a maple leaf using a glass saw. I then copy the shape on a piece of heat proof fibre paper, cutting away the network of leaf veins. The glass is laid on the fibre paper and melted to 800 degC in the kiln. The edges become smoothed and the glass sinks into the channels where the veins were cut from the fibre paper. The leaf is then slumped by reheating in the kiln over a bowl mould. I allow the glass to slump in a very free form way so each leaf is individally shaped.

Inspiration
I love leaves and when I see the range of streaky glasses available, they remind me of the seasons, especially the colourful season of autumn. Remember kicking through wind blown piles of leaves as a kid.....
