Nagas. An original screenprint with added sea serpents and lotus flowers.
Description
This is one of my very favourite new prints, because it is so complex. The combinations of patterns is quite complex, which keeps my eyes busy; and also, the meanings behind the patterns. Every now and then the guardians in the deep calm depths throw up some treasure, that rises about the turbulent waters of our world.
Process: I drew the water pattern and the sea serpents in pen and ink,converted them into silk screens and printed them in two colours.

Inspiration
Inspiration: Nagas are dragon like water spirits that were converted to Buddhism and stopped doing unhelpful things and instead turned their attentions to more spiritually useful projects such as guarding wish-fulfilling gems at the bottom of the ocean. You can see the gem rising out of the ocean in the lotus flower.
Sometimes people undertake and arduous journey to get to the bottom of the ocean and if they are worthy, the Nagas help them with their magic gemstone. It's probably all a metaphor for a spiritual journey and the precious gem is your own self realisation, but I hope your dreams come true.
Anyway, I thought it was quite nice to have some kind of powerful protector, and also that the turbulence in ones life might actually lead to good things: spiritual development, wishfulfilling gems, etc. So I made a print to remind myself of it.
