Pearls are a classic jewellery staple and have been used in jewellery making for thousands of years. They symbolise innocence and faith and are believed to promote harmony with nature, enhance wisdom and nurture love.
Most pearls found in jewellery are cultured - marine and freshwater molluscs are farmed and a small shell bead, or other stimulus is placed inside before returning them to the water. Layers of calcium carbonate (called "nacres") are secreted by the molluscs which coat the piece of shell to create a pearl.
The colour of the pearl depends on the mollusc - natural pearls can be white, cream, peach, pink, beige, grey, brown or black; however, some pearls are dyed to give deep, rich colours or enhance the pastel candy shades.
Did you know ... the oysters and mussels that make pearls are not the same as the oysters and mussels that we eat, so you are unlikely to find a pearl in your dinner - unless someone places it there on purpose!
