A carved, stoneware vase
Description
A unique and beautiful vase which was carved from a solid block of clay. It would make an interesting and arresting focal point in any contemporary interior.
The process of making this piece was slow and painstaking. First a block of clay of the right size was left to dry for several weeks, very gradually. Next, the shape of the vase was carved by hand and the whole piece cut in half lengthways wih a metal wire. Then the two sides were carefully hollowed out and then joined back together. As a result the vase is very robust and heavy.
The flowing, variegated glaze perfectly suits the rock-like form, with rivulets flowing like molten lava over the ledges. Because of its weight and thickness, the piece cooled very slowly in the kiln and tiny crystalline structures have formed in parts of the glaze.
It measures approx. 5.5 inches tall and around 3.5 inches wide. Mark Smalley's personal seal has been applied to the base.
Postage and packing for this piece will cost £4.50 for first-class recorded delivery.
