Obsidian is a volcanic glass and is formed when lava cools too quickly. However Snowflake Obsidian is so called because it contains white spots of Christobalite a type of Quartz known as Spherulites and as crystals form it takes on the appearance of snowflakes. Over time this turns it into rock and it loses it's 'glassy' appearance. No two pieces are alike.
