Journal Kit to make a Medieval, Natural Calf Leather Book

Description

Mediaeval Calf Leather Journal Kit

The kit contains the following materials:

1) Vegetable-tanned calf leather in a natural colour, sufficient to make the cover for ONE journal.
2) Leather for the closure.
3 Waxed cord for sewing.
4) Paper for the pages.
5) Detailed instructions will be e-mailed to you as a PDF file but if you would prefer a CD, I can send one instead. Just let me know at checkout.

The PDF file contains step-by-step foolproof instructions, showing you how to make this lovely journal. There are many detailed photographs and diagrams, ensuring success even if you have never made a book before.

The book has 6 sections of 4 folios (folded pages). That's 24 folios, making 48 leaves or 96 pages (sides).

It measures about 3 x 3.5 x 1 ins OR 8 x 9 x 3 cm

The first photograph shows the book made in natural calf.

The second photograph shows books made by members of my bookbinding class (at Artsway in the New Forest) none of whom had made a book before. As you can see these have plain covers.

The tutorial also gives ideas for decorating your cover, including tips for dyeing and painting the leather. Some painted journals can be seen in the third photograph.

Inspiration

I love making books, the materials, the process, the tactile qualities involved in bookbinding, the design process. It's all great fun and very rewarding. It's lovely to hold in your hand, the results of your own labour.

Having taught for too many years than I care to remember, I love the teaching process, too.

Bookbinding is an area of craft that some find daunting. I believe in demystifying processes. This craft encompasses an enormous range of skills and therefore can be approached by anyone!

Most people do not have time or opportunity to achieve the great heights of the greatest of 'fine' binders, but one can still make beautiful, artistic and functional objects, limited only by one's imagination!

My tutorials and kits will start you off on the design and making process. Some customers find inspiration with just one tutorial or kit, others have purchased nearly every one!
