Sgraffito Butterfly Mug
Description
The body of the mug measures approximately 90mm across and the height to the top of the handle is around 90mm. Each one is handmade therefore no two mugs are identical. The shape, size and glaze application will vary slightly between each item.
To make it I started off with a ball of red earthenware clay which I threw on a potter’s wheel and then I dipped the body in slip before adding on a decorative handle. The handle was made by rolling a coil of clay in a mold taken from a vintage cut glass dish. Slip was poured inside to give it a bright fresh interior and the sgraffito drawings were carved through the slip on the outside before firing. It was decorated with lead-free, food safe glaze and then a decal was fired into the smooth glazed surface.
You can see the mug making process (not including the sgraffito part) from start to finish in this two minute film at http://vimeo.com/27113222
Inspiration
I throw and hand-build simple forms with earthy red earthenware clay and pour contrasting smooth white slip inside. I fire the clay high just before it is vitrified and use subtle glazes which change colour on edges and where they pool. Intricate hand drawn digitally printed transfers are fired in to the glazed surfaces and patterned decals are playfully used to create my range of ceramics. My work is about contrasts and balance; a combination of raw and refined finishes traditional and industrial processes and creating unique handmade pieces for everyday use.
