According to the superstition, if a family has a beehive within their grounds, they must treat the bees’ with respect and inform them of any important family news.
If a girl from the family is planning on getting married, she must first inform her little brothers and sisters by going to the hive and saying “Little Brownies, little Brownies, your mistress is to be wed”. By doing this, the girl will be granted a long and happy marriage. To make doubly sure of good tidings, she can also leave a slice of wedding cake for the little bees.
