Item details

Because society in Tudor times was so defined by location and status, the peasant costumes are printed in subdued colours to show the earthy nature of their lifestyle. The fabric would have been dyed by the maker of the garment and it was only layer closest to the skin that would have been washed regularly. The wealthy followed the fashions dictated by the monarch of the day and dressed to please the king or queen. Elizabeth I greatly favoured reds, black, white and grey for her courtiers.
